Former England striker Malcolm Macdonald has cast doubt on the Three Lions' chances of winning the 2026 World Cup, despite their strong start. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, the 76-year-old, who scored six goals in 14 England caps in the 1970s, said he would "love" for football to come home but does not see it happening.
Macdonald's World Cup Prediction
Macdonald, also known as Super Mac, assessed England's performance after their opening 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas. While impressed by Thomas Tuchel's side, he believes reaching the semi-finals would be a successful tournament. "I don't think so (England winning the World Cup). To me, a successful tournament would be a semi final if they could get there. But I have a feeling that there are better sides, albeit there's been some really strange results," he said.
England's Opening Victory
England began their campaign with a 4-2 win against Croatia at the Dallas Stadium. Macdonald noted that Croatia were the better footballing side at times, but England possessed the "priceless" ability to score goals. The Three Lions now face Ghana in Boston in their second group match.
Harry Kane Verdict
The former Newcastle United and Arsenal striker praised England captain Harry Kane, who broke records for the national team. However, Macdonald expressed occasional frustration with Kane's positioning. "He is (breaking records) but there are some times that I think why is he out of position? But he always gets there in the end, so yeah, he's got a special ability. And of course it's the hardest thing to do, scoring goals, but he has certainly got that ability, and he's good for the team. He seems to be an excellent captain as well," Macdonald said.
Macdonald's Legacy and Visit
Macdonald, who scored 95 goals in 187 appearances for Newcastle United, was speaking during a visit to Bay View House in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, a care home specialising in dementia care. He reminisced with residents about his footballing heyday, the day after England's opening match. "We've got loads in common, so I'm no stranger to them. We just start chatting with them and there's always a sincerity and a warmth. It will be a lovely day," he said.
