Harvey Barnes has signed a long-term contract with Newcastle United, committing himself to the club potentially until the end of his top-flight career. The 28-year-old England international, who joined the Magpies in 2023 on a five-year deal with two years remaining, has now extended his stay on Tyneside.
The new deal removes any immediate threat of a move to Aston Villa and gives Barnes the security to take over as first-choice left winger following Anthony Gordon's departure.
Barnes: 'I love everything about it'
“It feels great to sign this new contract so early before the new season starts. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I’m delighted to continue that,” Barnes said. “When I first joined the club I quickly learned what a special place it is, but after three years here I know that even more. I love everything about it – the city, the stadium, the people – and I’m really happy extending my time here.”
He added: “I’ve had a taste of success in the last few years and enjoyed some really special moments with this team. We all want more of that and I want to be a key player that helps push the club forward.”
Howe: 'Very well deserved'
Manager Eddie Howe praised the winger, saying: “Harvey’s new contract is very well deserved and a reflection of the work he’s put in and the quality he’s shown throughout his three years at Newcastle United. Harvey is a player who has consistently produced special moments at vital times for the team. He’s calm in front of goal, whether that’s one-on-one or from distance, and is always a threat from wide areas. Harvey has vast experience at the highest level but we believe there is still more to come.”
Sporting director's view
Sporting Director Ross Wilson added: “Harvey’s record for the club speaks for itself. He managed to reach new heights last season on a personal level and that’s testament to the mentality and professionalism we see on a daily basis. We see him as a big part of our plans going forward, and it made total sense to secure his future. Much like we’ve done with Fabian Schär and Sven Botman in recent months, we’re delighted to extend that experience into what we see as Harvey’s prime years.”
Wilson also noted: “Everybody knows what Harvey is capable of on the pitch his personality off it. Harvey has full focus on the season ahead and I know he wants to make sure he continues to build on everything he has achieved so far at Newcastle.”
