Three senior England players have privately complained to manager Thomas Tuchel following the Three Lions' 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina on Wednesday, according to reports. The players expressed dissatisfaction with Tuchel's tactical approach after England took an early lead.
Defensive approach backfires
Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute, but the team immediately dropped into a low block to protect the advantage. This defensive posture invited pressure from Argentina's attack, and Enzo Fernandez equalized with five minutes remaining. Lautaro Martinez then scored a towering header in stoppage time to seal the win.
Tuchel's substitutions reinforced the defensive mindset, bringing on Nico O'Reilly, Dan Burn, and Ezri Konsa in the closing stages. Only after Martinez's goal did Tuchel introduce Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney, but it was too late to salvage the match.
Player discontent
Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett said: "A lot of England’s players, and some of the senior players, I might say, are not happy with the decisions that Thomas Tuchel took." He noted that at one point England had six defenders on the pitch. The BBC reported that at least three players complained privately about the approach.
Tuchel defended his tactics, claiming he instructed the team to "play higher up" and blamed an inability to retain possession. He said: "I think ball possession plays a crucial role. It’s maybe not in our DNA like it is in the Spanish, Argentinian or Brazilian DNA."
Tuchel stands firm
Despite calls from fans for his dismissal, the 52-year-old reaffirmed his commitment to his contract, which runs through Euro 2028. He denied accusations of parking the bus, stating: "I tried to help, not to become more passive with a back five, but to be more active."
England will now face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday, while Argentina meets Spain in Sunday's final as they aim to defend their title.
