David James has praised Liverpool for choosing Andoni Iraola as head coach over the "romantic" option of Xabi Alonso. The former Reds goalkeeper believes Iraola's style of football is better suited to the club.
James on Alonso and Slot
James admitted he was initially disappointed by Arne Slot's sacking last month but understood the reasoning. Slot was removed after an end-of-season review with sporting director Richard Hughes, and Iraola signed a two-year deal earlier this month.
Alonso, who won the 2005 Champions League with Liverpool, became Chelsea manager shortly before Slot's dismissal.
Why Iraola is the Better Choice
James told BetVictor: "As a Liverpool supporter, there's always a romantic side to wanting a former player to return and succeed. But you want the best manager, not necessarily the most popular one."
He added: "Iraola appears to be the better option. I was disappointed they parted ways with Slot, but the club felt they needed to change, and when Iraola became available, they couldn't ignore it."
James noted that Slot would have faced enormous pressure next season, whereas Iraola will have less expectation.
