Michael Carrick has dismissed concerns over Kobbie Mainoo's lack of playing time at the World Cup, insisting the Manchester United midfielder's tournament absence will have no bearing on his club future. Mainoo was the only outfield player in England's squad not to feature in North America, despite Thomas Tuchel making numerous changes. He was expected to play in the bronze medal match against France but was ruled out with a back injury.
Carrick's Confidence in Mainoo
Carrick, who restored Mainoo to the United side after Ruben Amorim's sacking in January, said: "I've known Kobbie a long time. I started working with him when he was 13 or 14. What he's done at such a young age is incredible. It wasn't a big decision to play him." Mainoo's form in the second half of the season earned him a new contract and a key role under Carrick.
Criticism of Tuchel's Handling
Former United midfielder Nicky Butt slammed Tuchel's treatment, suggesting Mainoo should have refused to play against France. Ex-Premier League boss Neil Warnock also criticised Tuchel for reportedly commenting on Mainoo's training performances. Warnock told talkSPORT: "You don't say that to the press. You put an arm around him and keep things inside the camp."
Mainoo's Road to Recovery
Carrick revealed he has been cautious in his approach, focusing on letting Mainoo regain his rhythm rather than immediately addressing weaknesses. "It's not easy when you haven't played to find your form," Carrick said. "I've given him a few pointers but trusted in his talent." Mainoo will now rejoin United's squad for pre-season ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
