Burnham: Nation United Behind England's World Cup Bid

Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham has declared that the entire nation is united behind England's rollercoaster World Cup campaign, as the Three Lions prepare to face Norway in the quarter-finals tonight. Writing exclusively in the Mirror, Burnham said the tournament has reminded Britons of their shared common ground in an era of political division.

Burnham's Message of Unity

"Sometimes it can feel like these moments, when the entire country comes together, are few and far between nowadays," Burnham wrote. "That's why this World Cup has made me feel hopeful. Not just because Harry Kane has brought his shooting boots and Jordan Pickford is having the tournament of his life. But because the whole country feels like it's going on the same journey together."

The Labour leader-in-waiting highlighted scenes of parents letting children stay up late to watch matches, and pub-goers cheering replays of Pointless on big screens, as evidence of the unifying power of football. He added, "Sometimes it can feel like we're living in an increasingly divided country and the political turbulence of the last decade certainly hasn't helped. But in moments like this, it reminds us of how much we have in common."

Personal Connection to Football

Burnham, an Everton fan who grew up in a Liverpool-supporting household in Culcheth, recalled how football has given him some of the best moments of his life. He said the sport provides a sense of community and place, whether for a pub team playing five-a-side or Harry Kane taking a penalty. "These are our teams, forged in our communities, representing our places," he said.

Burnham is on course to become Prime Minister after securing the backing of 322 Labour MPs. He is expected to formally take over from Keir Starmer on July 20, the day after the World Cup final.

Potential Bank Holiday for England Win

Earlier this week, outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer hinted at a bank holiday if England ends 60 years of hurt by winning the World Cup. Asked by reporters at the Nato summit, Starmer said, "On the question of a bank holiday, I don't want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final." Downing Street is reportedly preparing for the idea, with a bank holiday likely to be held on the Friday after the final.

England's quarter-final clash with Norway kicks off tonight, with the nation's hopes resting on Thomas Tuchel's squad.
