Jude Bellingham was caught on camera expressing frustration with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, sparking a debate among fans.
England's World Cup Dreams Shattered
The Three Lions' hopes of a first World Cup victory since 1966 ended on Wednesday night in Atlanta, as a late Argentina comeback saw them lose a dramatic semi-final. Barcelona-bound Anthony Gordon had given Thomas Tuchel's side the lead, but two late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez condemned England to another major tournament exit.
England will now face France in the third-place play-off, while Argentina prepares to play Spain in Sunday's final. The inquest into Tuchel's side's performance has begun, with footage reviewed and tactical decisions scrutinized.
Bellingham's Angry Exclamation
Viewers watching the game at home spotted Bellingham's angry outburst as the game turned in Argentina's favor. Chelsea star Fernandez leveled the scores with a sweet strike from range. Pickford launched himself to his right but could not get a hand to the ball, which curled to the left and did not settle in the corner.
Bellingham had been the sole player attempting to close down Fernandez as he shot from outside the area and had not seen the ball go in. However, after viewing a replay of the goal on the big screen, the Real Madrid man appeared distinctly unimpressed with his goalkeeper.
BBC cameras captured Bellingham—who has scored six goals at this year's World Cup—exclaiming, "It's the middle of the goal" as he reviewed Pickford's attempt to save the shot.
Criticism from Former Players and Fans
Former England defender Gary Neville also criticized the Everton keeper during his appearance on the Stick to Football World Cup Watch Party, saying: "Not gone in the corner, that, he's got to save that. Got to save it. He's past it."
However, the criticism of Pickford has not been well received by all England fans, sparking a row between supporters. Some demanded more respect for the goalkeeper.
"The game would’ve been 1-4 if not for Pickford. Jude must be running mad," wrote one fan on X. Another added: "He has been carrying England through the tournament. He needed someone to carry him today but they all went into hiding. He just wanted to qualify for the final. I'm gutted for him."
A third fan said: "Pickford is excellent and always is. The sole issue is his height, but his skills are definitely good enough and he's quite blatantly not the problem."
However, others sided with Bellingham. One fan wrote: "His positioning was disappointing to see really, I won’t blame Jude for being shocked." Another said: "Pickford is too small to be a top level keeper, his positional play has always been questioned, he relies on his agility to get him out of poor positions. But a top level keeper saves that easily."
A third fan concluded: "Love Pickford and what’s he’s done for England. But a changing of the guard is needed for the next tournament."
