Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has revealed that his decision to take over as Chelsea manager instead of returning to Anfield was simply a matter of timing. The Spaniard, who famously scored in Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph, had been strongly linked with the Reds' job after leaving Real Madrid last season.
Alonso Explains Timing Behind Chelsea Move
Speaking to the BBC on his first day at Stamford Bridge, Alonso said: "Well, it is about timings. I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you. I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here."
Alonso had been in contact with Liverpool's representatives before accepting the Chelsea role, according to BBC Sport. At that time, Liverpool's owners FSG appeared ready to stick with under-pressure manager Arne Slot, who had won the Premier League in his first season but saw the team finish fifth this term.
Slot Sacked Too Late for Alonso Return
Poor results and performances led to large sections of supporters losing faith in Slot, and his contract was terminated with a year still to run. However, by then Alonso had already agreed a deal to succeed Liam Rosenior at Chelsea. The 44-year-old started his managerial tenure with the West London club last week.
Iraola Takes Over at Liverpool
Andoni Iraola, a childhood friend of Alonso, has since replaced Slot at Liverpool. He faced the media for the first time on Monday morning in his maiden Liverpool press conference. The 44-year-old, who signed only a two-year deal, acknowledged he will need to make new signings after Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate all left the club this summer.
Alonso and Iraola to Face Off in December
Alonso and Iraola will come face-to-face as Premier League managers for the first time on Saturday, December 5 at Stamford Bridge, subject to TV broadcast arrangements.
