Adam Peaty-Ramsay's mother Caroline has indicated she is ready to rebuild bridges after her son's emotional bronze medal win at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In a statement, she said the family continues to support Adam from afar, describing him as "our son who we love, whom we supported to reach his aspirations."
Bronze Medal Sparks Emotional Outburst
Adam was defeated by Australian swimmer Sam Williamson and 18-year-old Filip Nowacki from Jersey in the men's 50m breaststroke final. After the race, he admitted the family feud had "taken a toll" on his career. "It's hard because I know how hard I work. I know the s*** I've been through, which is no fault of my own, but it does take its toll," he said. "I'm not crying because it's bronze instead of gold. I'm crying because I know I am better than that."
He questioned the sacrifices he has made, including missing family events for training, and said the result did not represent "human excellence" for him.
Mother's Instagram Response
Caroline Peaty responded on Instagram with a black and white photo of Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders and the caption: "I forgive people but that doesn't mean I accept their behaviour or trust them. I forgive them for me, so I can let go and move on with my life." She acknowledged speaking to a national newspaper early in the fallout but insisted she has not spoken publicly about her son since, hinting at a desire to reconcile.
In a fuller statement, she added: "Our love, our time, our sacrifices were given freely with no expectation of financial reward just genuinely given with the love as any mother and father would do for their child."
Background of the Feud
The rift began when Adam married Holly Ramsay, daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay, last December. The Peaty family were banned from the wedding except for Adam's sister Bethany, after a fallout over Caroline not being invited to Holly's hen do. The feud deepened with public remarks on social media and in the press.
Adam and Holly come from very different backgrounds. Adam grew up in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, as the son of a Lidl caretaker and a nursery manager. Neighbours would club together to fundraise for petrol so he could attend swimming practice. Holly, meanwhile, grew up in wealth as the daughter of Gordon Ramsay, worth an estimated £152 million.
Family Source Disputes Narrative
According to The Daily Mail, a family source painted a different picture, claiming Adam was "playing the blame game" and should "take accountability for your own actions for once." The source added: "The hurt you feel over a medal does not compare to the hurt your mother felt when she said she did not want to be on this planet any more…" The insider also alleged Adam stopped his mother from seeing her grandson from a previous relationship out of spite.
Adam responded on Instagram, calling his bronze medal "bittersweet" and vowing to "keep fighting, learning, adapting and striving for excellence until I can no longer give anymore." He added: "To the people out there who want to hurt me and my family with comments, I have seen this story a thousand times with other athletes from many sports. We are athletes, doing something we love and that is our deepest passion. As it's said, be the change you want to see in the world, and, I want a better world for the next generation of athletes. Love always wins."
