In a historic and bizarre opening night of the Super League season, Leigh Leopards defeated Wigan Warriors 1-0 in golden point extra time, ending a 42-year winless run at the Brick Community Stadium. The match, witnessed by a record opening-night crowd of 21,748, finished 0-0 after 80 minutes—the first scoreless regulation time in Super League history.
The game was defined by relentless defence, with both sides repelling attacks and forcing errors. Wigan's Liam Farrell was sin-binned for kicking the ball away, but Leigh failed to capitalise. Wigan thought they had scored through Jai Field, only for a ball steal to be spotted in the buildup. As the clock ticked down, both teams spurned drop goal opportunities, and Wigan's Adam Keighran was sin-binned for a high tackle with seconds remaining.
In golden point extra time, Wigan turned down a drop goal attempt on their first possession. Leigh then broke downfield, and Gareth O'Brien—who had kicked the decisive drop goal in the 2016 Million Pound Game—held his nerve to slot a long-range two-pointer, securing a 1-0 victory for the Leopards.
Leigh coach Adrian Lam hailed the achievement: 'Wigan are the only club we haven’t beaten since coming back up to Super League. Our first win here in 42 years. It’s a wonderful achievement.'
