Six Liverpool restaurants have been selected by Time Out as some of the best places to eat in the UK right now. The list spans Middle Eastern sharing plates, authentic Italian dishes, Scandi-inspired cooking, vegetarian favourites and fine dining, highlighting the variety of the city's food scene.
Time Out is a global media brand offering expert guides and recommendations on the best things to do, see, eat and drink in cities worldwide. Its restaurant picks are made by local editors and expert contributors, who assess venues based on food, service, atmosphere, value and the overall dining experience. The recommendations are editorial choices rather than rankings based on customer reviews or paid placements.
Time Out's top Liverpool restaurants
Maray – With locations on Bold Street and Albert Dock, Maray is described as one of the best dining experiences in Liverpool right now. It is known for its disco cauliflower with chermoula, harissa and tahini, plus halloumi in pomegranate molasses, whipped goat cheese and pickled apple.
Nord – Executive chef Daniel Heffy, who worked at Michelin-starred venues in Stockholm, combines Northern hospitality with Scandi-inspired food and drink. The menu uses seasonal produce from local suppliers, with dishes such as fresh fazzoletti pasta and cod Kiev, alongside basil cocktails at the pastel pink '70s bar.
Manifest – Opened by Paul Durand and Charlotte Jones, Manifest was created to be the type of restaurant they would want to eat at on a Saturday night. It offers intimate seating, chatty waiters and a chilled-out vibe, with generously portioned seasonal small plates and affordable fine dining. The salt and vinegar crisps and onion tart come recommended.
Fine dining and plant-based options
The Art School – Located in a former Victorian Home For Destitute Children, The Art School is described as proper old school fine dining. Head chef Paul Askew champions regional produce, with many local suppliers named on the menu. Meat and fish dishes shine, such as sirloin beef with ox cheek, and vegetarian and pescatarian menus are also available.
The Egg – Found through a bright purple arch on Newington, The Egg is an award-winning vegetarian and vegan café. It serves pasta, pitta sandwiches, fry-ups and stir-fries in a vast, open-plan space on the top floor of a Grade II listed building, which doubles as a gallery and stays open until 10pm. Corkage is priced at £2 per person.
Bakchich – Offering laidback Lebanese and Moroccan cuisine, Bakchich serves falafel, tabbouleh, hummus and shakshuka, with staff treating guests like family. The Lebanese pizzas are described as moreish and filling.
The Italian Club – A Bold Street institution with high ceilings and vintage maps on the walls, The Italian Club is praised for its pizza and pasta. The lasagne is frequently called the best in the city, and the truffle and pancetta tartufata pizza is described as indulgent. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. The venue has since shut, with former head chef Marco Muscedere and manager Tom Basham reviving the seafood concept as Club Fish inside Duke Street Market food hall.
