Foster gran spared jail despite seven-year child endangerment sentence
Foster gran spared jail despite child endangerment sentence

Brenda Deutsch, 71, a foster grandmother at the centre of claims she “traded” her adopted daughter for a pet monkey, has been spared jail despite being sentenced over a case that drew international attention.

Deutsch was sentenced on September 3 in Missouri, USA, after pleading guilty to first-degree felony child endangerment. A judge handed her seven years in prison but suspended the entire sentence, meaning Deutsch will avoid time behind bars if she completes three years of state-supervised probation and counselling.

Case began with anonymous tip

The case began in November 2024, when an anonymous tip to the Department of Social Services alleged a child was being abused by her foster mother. Deutsch, who had fostered more than 200 children over several decades, was convicted, according to the Lincoln County Journal.

Investigators later heard allegations from a teen foster girl, who said she was beaten with “paddles, shoes, and wood trim”. In February 2025, the girl was reported missing by her school district. Authorities tracked her to a home in Eastland, Texas, where Deutsch had flown her to live with another exotic animal collector.

Teen found in filthy conditions

The teen was found living alone in filthy conditions, surrounded by exotic animals, with little adult supervision. When the Texas caretaker later tried to send the girl back, Deutsch initially refused to pay for her flight, reports said.

At sentencing, Circuit Judge Thomas Frawley said Deutsch was not convicted of trading a child for a monkey or of direct physical abuse under the plea deal, with two child abuse counts dismissed, Fox 2 Now reported. Instead, she was sentenced specifically for sending the child to an unvetted, unsafe, and unsanitary out-of-state home.

Family disputes and support rally

Deutsch’s biological daughter Brina Johnson insisted the monkey claim was true. “I’m kind of lost for words because this is not the end we wished for,” Johnson said after the sentencing. She told the court there was a child present who, she claimed, was the child traded for the monkey. “I have the whole conversation on my phone, which I turned over to the detectives,” she said, adding she handed over photos showing her mum with the animal.

Asked why Deutsch wanted a monkey, Johnson replied: “That’s what she did; she had at least seven monkeys. That’s just her thing. But she wasn’t any nicer to those monkeys than she was to a child.”

Deutsch was supported by a rally outside the courthouse. Bryan Hargis branded the result “a travesty of justice”, adding: “They’ve tried to turn somebody into a villain that’s not.” He claimed: “She’s done missionary work… she’s been to Africa to help needy children. She’s a very caring person.”

Johnson hit back: “It was good to know somebody knows from the other side of the street, that this shouldn’t have happened. None of it should. And the system did fail us, failed them all.”

Licence revoked and further charges

The victim, now 17, spoke to Fox 2 but asked not to be fully shown on camera. Her guardian shared a GoFundMe link, saying: “For anyone who would like to help Annabella Deutsch get a new start with her life and get a car to drive to school for her senior year.”

The judge also permanently revoked Deutsch’s foster licence. She still faces separate felony allegations of forgery and stealing over claims she submitted fraudulent invoices to the state for foster-care reimbursements.
