The British & Irish Lions' hopes of a clean sweep were dashed in a rain-soaked Sydney Test, as the Wallabies secured a 28-23 victory in a match interrupted by a lightning storm. The Lions, who had won the first two Tests, were unable to overcome a spirited Australian side that capitalised on the wet conditions and a mounting injury toll.
The game was halted for 38 minutes at 9.12pm local time with the Wallabies leading 8-0, after lightning struck near the stadium. The Lions lost captain Maro Itoje, Tommy Freeman, and James Ryan to head injury assessments during the first half, leaving Dan Sheehan to take over the captaincy. Australia also lost Tom Lynagh to a head injury after a heavy tackle.
Dylan Pietsch opened the scoring for the Wallabies in the seventh minute, diving over in the left corner after a no-look pass from Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii. Max Jorgensen and Tate McDermott added second-half tries, while Jac Morgan scored a consolation try for the Lions in the 61st minute. Will Stuart's last-gasp score was too little, too late.
The Wallabies' tactical superiority and handling of the conditions were key to their victory, as the Lions' kicking game faltered and their lineout struggled. Australia's back-row, led by dynamic performances, outplayed their counterparts. The result denied the Lions their first clean sweep on a multi-Test tour since 1927.
Lions chief executive Ben Calverley confirmed the team would return to Australia in the future, while the Wallabies celebrated a morale-boosting win that signals progress since their 2023 World Cup disappointment.
