Tommy Fury is set to receive a WBC world ranking following his victory over former World's Strongest Man Eddie Hall earlier this month. The WBC president, Mauricio Sulaiman, has indicated that Fury could be placed in the top 15 of the cruiserweight division, despite the fight being an exhibition and Fury having no recognised opponents on his record.
WBC President Backs Fury's Ranking
Sulaiman told Betway: "I think so. They're a fighting family. I think even the father could be ranked. He's unbelievable. They are brave, they are strong, so absolutely." He added: "I think he has the merits. We like everything that has to do with crossover, with its support. Let's make it interesting. Let's understand the current times while respecting boxing at the same time. So, I'm all up for that, and we'll see what the ratings committee will do for next month's rankings."
Comparisons to Jake Paul
The WBC previously faced fierce criticism for ranking social media star Jake Paul, which made him eligible for a world title shot. Fury's potential ranking follows a similar path, with his brother Tyson Fury calling on Sulaiman to give Tommy a top-15 spot at light heavyweight or cruiserweight. Tyson said: "Tommy is a real fighter. I'd like Mauricio Sulaiman to rank him in the top 15 in the light heavyweight or cruiserweight division. Tommy would have a good fight with Noel Mikaelian, the WBC champion. Tommy has the ability to beat him...I think a world title shot for Tommy next, maybe."
Champion Responds
WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian responded by agreeing to fight Tommy, but with a condition. He said: "If your brother wants a title shot, I am up for it if Mauricio gives me my voluntary defence back, since I haven't heard anything back from the team I was supposed to fight. But only if you vouch to fight me next. You love the cruiserweights, don't you?"
