The discovery of a replica grenade at Goole Vikings' home ground caused significant disruption on Sunday, delaying their Championship rugby league match against Whitehaven by 80 minutes. Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene shortly before the scheduled 3pm kick-off at Victoria Pleasure Ground, leading to a controlled lockdown of the stadium.
Emergency Response Activated
During routine pre-match safety inspections, the club's ground safety team identified an unidentified, potentially explosive item near the athletics track surrounding the pitch. Contrary to some external reports, the item was located away from areas accessible to supporters and staff. However, due to its nature and proximity to the scheduled event, the club immediately activated its established emergency protocols.
Humberside Police officers attended the scene and established a cordon while a specialist team from the regional Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called to examine the item. The stadium remained under controlled lockdown until the specialists arrived to assess the suspicious object.
Replica Device Safely Removed
Upon thorough inspection, the suspected grenade was confirmed to be a non-explosive replica and was safely removed from the area. Humberside Police stated that the item posed no actual explosive threat, allowing play to eventually resume at 4.20pm, 80 minutes later than originally planned.
Goole Vikings released a statement 30 minutes before the intended kick-off time, advising fans not to arrive at the arena before 4pm due to "an incident at the Victoria Pleasure Ground that is currently being handled by the relevant authorities." The club later issued a more detailed statement on Monday explaining the sequence of events.
Club Praises Professional Response
In their Monday statement, Goole Vikings extended sincere thanks to all parties involved in managing the unusual situation. "The response from all parties involved was swift, co-ordinated and highly professional," the club stated. "The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to the club management, emergency services and local authority partners for their exceptional management of a highly unusual situation."
The club emphasized that their standard matchday operations and safety protocols functioned as intended, with the ground safety team identifying the item during routine pre-match inspections before gates opened to spectators.
Match Outcome and League Implications
Following the delayed start, the match proceeded with Whitehaven defeating Goole Vikings 36-22. This result had significant implications for the Championship standings, with Whitehaven moving up to 17th position while Goole Vikings dropped to 18th place in the league table.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust safety protocols at sporting venues, even when dealing with replica devices rather than genuine threats. The coordinated response between club officials, emergency services, and local authorities ensured the situation was resolved without injury or further disruption beyond the substantial match delay.
