Declan Rice Role Questioned as Arsenal Confirm First Summer Sale

Arsenal have confirmed the permanent transfer of Jakub Kiwior to Porto, marking their first sale of the summer window. The Polish defender, who spent the season on loan at the Portuguese club, has signed a four-year deal after Porto triggered a £14 million option, potentially rising to £19 million. The move was announced in Arsenal's weekly loan watch update, stating: 'Jakub Kiwior’s move to Porto has now become permanent following the Dragaos’ Liga Portugal title triumph last weekend.'

Meanwhile, Declan Rice's role has come under scrutiny after he filled in at right-back during Arsenal's 1-0 win over West Ham. With Ben White ruled out for the season due to an MCL injury and Jurrien Timber's fitness concerns, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes suggested Rice should remain at right-back for the remainder of the campaign. Speaking on 'The Good, The Bad and The Football' podcast, Scholes said: 'Declan Rice looks like he would suit playing at right-back to me. He can play there. He’s not a big creator anyway.'

Scholes compared Rice's versatility to that of Roy Keane, who played right-back for extended periods during his career. However, Rice returned to midfield in the second half against West Ham after Arsenal began to lose the midfield battle. The Gunners are three wins away from securing the Premier League title for the first time since 2004, and also face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on May 30.

Arsenal's victory at West Ham was controversial but keeps them on track for a potential league and European double. Manager Mikel Arteta faces a selection dilemma at right-back, with Cristhian Mosquera also available as a natural defender. The club's first summer sale of Kiwior provides some financial flexibility as they prepare for a busy transfer window.
