Conor McGregor has publicly endorsed the UFC's upcoming White House fight card, despite his notable absence from the lineup. The former two-weight world champion took to social media to share his enthusiasm, posting a photo of the event with the caption "love it" and later adding that it was "a great card."
UFC White House Card Announcement
UFC CEO Dana White unveiled the White House card on Saturday night, setting the stage for a high-profile event on President Donald Trump's front lawn on June 14. The main event will see Ilia Topuria defend his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje, a matchup that promises intense action in the octagon.
McGregor's Expected Return
McGregor had been widely speculated to headline the card against Michael Chandler, but plans shifted, with his comeback now anticipated for the following month. In a recent interview with Smash Cast, McGregor revealed his initial expectations, stating, "As I was aware, it was the White House. I was up for the White House. I know the administration was strong for me to be in the White House. It was McGregor versus Chandler."
He elaborated on the potential fight, saying, "The story was built in; Chandler is a standup guy, he's electric in the cage. He comes to bring it. I'm the Mac. I'll fly through the air in an opponent like Chandler. It would have been dynamite as a fight." However, McGregor acknowledged the change in plans, noting, "And somewhere down the line... [they said] maybe we're going to go with you for International Fight Week."
Co-Main Event and McGregor's Weight Class
In the co-main event, Alex Pereira will move up to heavyweight to challenge Ciryl Gane for the interim belt, adding another layer of excitement to the card. Meanwhile, McGregor confirmed that his return will be at welterweight, explaining, "I'm going to do 170. As you know I'm a big boy. A lot bigger than before."
He expressed frustration over the delay in finalizing his comeback, stating, "[They said], 'We're going to offer you this opponent'. Yes, no problem. I accept day after day after day. That's a great matchup is all you ever hear about out of me, and no contract came. I'm still here in this limbo." McGregor added that his manager, Audi, is scheduled for a face-to-face meeting in Las Vegas on Monday, hoping for a "respectable offer" to materialize.
McGregor's Supportive Stance
Despite the setback, McGregor remains supportive of the White House card and understanding of the situation. He said, "I do like Chandler. I have been preparing for him for the last two years. I feel a bit weird; he deserves to go after the waiting and it would be a great fight. It gets me back in there but you know they feared off it. You know I'm not going to be too picky. I have to get back. I'm eager to get back. I've been out and love myself. So I'm sorry Chandler, it is what it is."
This positive response from McGregor highlights his continued engagement with the UFC community and anticipation for future bouts, even as he awaits his own return to the cage.
