Manchester United began their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Championship side Wrexham at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland. Sam Smith's first-half goal proved decisive, but the match offered glimpses of promise, particularly from Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos and several young substitutes.
First-half struggles
Wrexham started brightly, catching United off guard with a high press that created early chances. United held firm initially but struggled to cope with long balls from the Welsh side. The breakthrough came from a throw-in: the ball bypassed the six-yard box, where an unmarked Sam Smith tapped into an empty net.
Michael Carrick's team went into halftime trailing 1-0. Wrexham, further along in their preparations, looked sharper and deserved their lead. United made 11 changes at the break, fielding a youthful lineup for the second half.
Second-half improvements
The young United side showed more comfort on the ball. Radak Vitek made a crucial save to prevent Wrexham doubling their lead in a one-on-one situation. Despite pushing for an equaliser, United only created half-chances, with Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward making comfortable saves.
