Belgium's World Cup quarter-final preparations have been thrown into disarray after defender Zeno Debast was prohibited from playing by his club Sporting Lisbon, just hours before the Red Devils face Spain in Los Angeles.
The 22-year-old has not yet featured for manager Rudi Garcia's side in the tournament, and it now appears he will be unable to take the pitch regardless of his own or his manager's wishes. Sporting have cited concerns over his fitness after he sustained a thigh injury in May while playing for the Portuguese club.
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) confirmed that Debast will not be available for the quarter-final. A spokesperson said: "Zeno Debast will not be available for the quarter final. His club, Sporting CP, have informed the player that they did not consider him to be medically fit to play matches."
The RBFA noted that this assessment differs from that of their own medical staff, as well as FIFA's medical and insurance authorities. Debast is currently training individually under the supervision of the RBFA's Performance Department.
Injury Timeline and Missed Matches
Debast returned to Belgium shortly after his injury so national team medics could examine the problem. Garcia later named him in his 26-man World Cup squad, but the defender was forced to miss Belgium's group stage fixtures: a 1-1 draw with Egypt, a goalless stalemate with Iran, and a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand.
He was also absent during Belgium's thrilling 3-2 win against Senegal in the round of 32. However, he did return to the squad for the round of 16 victory over World Cup hosts the USA, a 4-1 win.
Debast's Optimism and Garcia's Evasion
Following his absence during the group stage, Debast expressed optimism about his recovery. He said: "Everything is going as planned. I feel good. As a player, it is not easy to watch your team train and play without being able to participate. But, I am grateful to be here and to be able to work on my return here."
Garcia also appeared to sidestep questions about Debast's fitness. When asked for injury updates, he said: "Everyone apart from Amadou Onana is ready. He's a huge loss for our tournament. There's another player who is not available, who could play tomorrow but we will discuss this after the World Cup."
Impact on Belgium's Quarter-Final Hopes
The news that Debast's club are blocking him from featuring against Spain is a bitter blow, particularly given his expressed optimism. Belgium already face a tough challenge against Spain, who have been one of the tournament's standout teams. The match kicks off at 8pm BST in Los Angeles.
The club-versus-country dispute highlights ongoing tensions between national teams and clubs over player fitness and availability during international tournaments. Belgium will now have to rely on their remaining squad members to overcome Spain and advance to the semi-finals.
