In a groundbreaking development at the Winter Paralympics, Ukrainian para-biathlete Maksym Murashkovskyi has secured a silver medal in the men's visually impaired biathlon, attributing his success to an unconventional coach: ChatGPT. The 25-year-old athlete, competing alongside his guide Vitaliy Trush, achieved a flawless performance without missing a single shot, showcasing the potential of artificial intelligence in elite sports training.
AI as a Multifaceted Training Partner
Murashkovskyi disclosed that he has been integrating OpenAI's large language model into his regimen for the past six months, utilising it not merely for tactical advice but as a comprehensive support system. "I used it as a psychologist, coach and, sometimes, as a doctor," he explained, highlighting how ChatGPT contributed to half of his training plan, including motivation and strategy. This innovative approach marks a significant departure from traditional human-led coaching methods, which Murashkovskyi described as "classical."

Expressing strong belief in AI's transformative capabilities, Murashkovskyi labelled it "a revolutionary technology" that has enabled him to train in novel ways. However, he emphasised its positive potential, stating, "I use it for learning, for languages, for some of my projects, in chemistry, biology and sports."

Murashkovskyi's achievement contributes to Ukraine's strong standing at the Winter Paralympics, where the team currently holds second place in the medal table with ten medals after just three days of competition. His calm demeanour post-race, despite it being only his second Paralympic event, underscores the psychological benefits he gained from AI assistance. "I have been preparing for this race for many years, so it is what it is," he remarked, though the exact influence of ChatGPT on his composure remains unspecified.
