Artistic gymnast Kate McDonald banished memories of her 2022 disappointment by winning the uneven bars gold for Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday. The 25-year-old scored 14.333 points, the only gymnast to hit the 14.000 mark, beating Canada's Ellie Black by 0.433 points. Wales' Emily Roper took bronze.
Redemption in Glasgow
McDonald finished seventh on the uneven bars at the 2022 Birmingham Games. Her gold in Glasgow followed the team gold she won earlier in the competition, making it two victories from two events.
Floor bronze ends drought
James Hardy claimed bronze in the floor exercise with 13.433 points, his first individual medal and second bronze on his Commonwealth Games debut. It ended Australia's 16-year drought on the men's floor apparatus. Jesse Moore added to Australia's medal tally with all-around bronze the previous day.
Tribute and other results
Hardy competed with a pink ribbon painted on his right ring fingernail in tribute to his mother Sally, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Sally is in remission after surgery but could not travel to Glasgow. Hardy's teammates Moore, Ritam Malik, Ben Foster and Tru Hagens also painted their nails in support. Malik missed out on pommel horse bronze by 0.500 points, while Moore fell and finished seventh. Georgia Godwin finished fifth in the vault, and Ruby Pass placed eighth after a fall on the uneven bars.
