Eloy Room's 15 saves vs Ecuador spark Instagram surge to 760K

Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room became an overnight sensation after a heroic performance against Ecuador in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making 15 saves to secure a 0-0 draw and seeing his Instagram following surge from around 100,000 to over 760,000.

Record-equalling display

In the Group E clash, Ecuador dominated with 26 shots, 15 on target, while Curacao managed only 10 attempts, four on target. Room's 15 saves matched the World Cup record for most saves in a single match, previously held by USA's Tim Howard, who also made 15 saves against Belgium in 2014 (across 120 minutes). Opta later clarified Howard's tally was also 15, drawing the two level.

Man of the Match and social media explosion

Room, who plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship, earned the FIFA Man of the Match award. His Instagram followers skyrocketed overnight, reaching nearly 600,000 by the final whistle and surpassing 760,000 shortly after. "I think I need a statue in Curacao," Room joked post-match. He added he was "a little bit annoyed" at not breaking Howard's record but proud of the team effort.

Historic point for Curacao

The result gave Curacao, a nation of just over 150,000 people, their first ever World Cup point. Room's performance included 10 saves from inside the box. "For me as a goalkeeper, this is almost the perfect game," he said, praising his teammates' defensive work.
