Dan Burn Backed for England World Cup Role by Fenwick

Former England international Terry Fenwick has called on Thomas Tuchel to give Newcastle United defender Dan Burn a starting role for the Three Lions at the 2026 World Cup. Burn, who stands at 6ft 7in, was an unused substitute in England's opening 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas, with John Stones preferred in central defence.

Fenwick's Endorsement

Fenwick, now based in Trinidad and Tobago running the Football Factory project, told Chronicle Live: "I’d love to see Dan Burn start because he’s a big, strong and no-nonsense player. Teams won’t get away with anything with Dan Burn. Not just defensively, but attacking-wise, he is always a threat in the opposition box." He added that he has been disappointed with some set-piece deliveries at the tournament and believes Burn could benefit from Declan Rice's quality crosses.

Burn's Composure

Burn himself told Chronicle Live in Dallas that he remains relaxed about his chances and is waiting for his opportunity. Fenwick drew parallels with past England teams, noting that the current North East representatives—Jordan Pickford, Dan Burn, and Jordan Henderson—will "stand up and be counted," much like Bryan Robson and Fenwick himself did in previous eras.

England's World Cup Prospects

Fenwick believes this England squad is the strongest in years and that only they can beat themselves. He said: "I think we will get through the group stage comfortably and then at the knockout stage we need our top men at the top of their game." He dismissed other contenders, stating Spain look average, Belgium have been average despite world-class players, and the same goes for Brazil and Argentina. "I think with this England team we are bigger, better, stronger and quicker," he added.

Fenwick praised Tuchel's management style: "He is kick, bollock and bite! If you aren’t doing it, he will haul you off, and we have needed somebody with that ferociousness." He highlighted Harry Kane's goalscoring prowess but stressed the need for a supporting cast.

Personal Connection

Fenwick, a Seaham Harbour native who won 20 caps for England, plans to attend knockout games in the States. He said: "I’ll be jetting up for the knockout games in the States. I might be from Seaham Harbour originally, but I’m singing my heart out for England this summer. I think we can go far." He hopes to return to the UK in August or September as a world champion.
