Australia Women thrashed India Women by eight wickets in the opening match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2026, chasing down a target of 143 with 11 balls to spare. The victory was set up by a dominant batting display, anchored by Beth Mooney's unbeaten 78 off 54 balls.
Clinical Chase by Australia
India, after winning the toss and opting to bat, posted a competitive total of 142 for 6, thanks to a brisk 52 off 38 balls from Shafali Verma and a late cameo from Richa Ghosh (25 off 16). However, Australia's chase was never in doubt as openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney put on a 90-run partnership in just 10.3 overs. Healy fell for 41 off 32, but Mooney continued to dominate, hitting 12 fours. She was well supported by Tahlia McGrath, who remained unbeaten on 32 off 26.
India's Batting Effort Falls Short
India's innings was built around Verma's half-century, but they struggled to accelerate in the middle overs. Australia's bowlers, led by Megan Schutt (2 for 25) and Alana King (1 for 21), kept the scoring in check. India managed only 38 runs in the last five overs, losing three wickets in the process. According to India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, "We were 15-20 runs short. Our bowlers tried hard, but Australia batted really well."
Mooney's Masterclass
Beth Mooney was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten knock. Her innings was a masterclass in chasing, as she rotated strike effectively and found the boundary at regular intervals. Australia's victory sets a strong tone for their campaign, while India will look to bounce back in their next match against Pakistan. The tournament continues with high expectations from both teams.
