A national hero, Baracca was credited with 34 aerial victories before he was shot down and killed in 1918. The black horse, a symbol of immense power and pride, was his personal talisman.
A Fateful Meeting
A decade later, a young Enzo Ferrari met Baracca's parents after a gruelling race in Ravenna. It was there that Countess Paolina Baracca made a heartfelt suggestion that would change automotive history forever.
"Put my son's prancing horse on your cars," she told Ferrari. "It will bring you good luck."
Enzo Ferrari, deeply moved by the meeting and the weight of the gesture, took her advice to heart. He adopted the emblem, but with a few significant changes to make it his own.
Creating an Icon
Ferrari made two crucial alterations to Baracca's original design. First, he changed the horse's posture from a rearing stallion to a more powerful, horizontal prance. Second, and most famously, he placed the horse against a bright yellow background, the official colour of his hometown of Modena.
He also added the initials S and F at the top of the emblem, not for 'Scuderia Ferrari' as many assume, but for 'Savio', the name of the fighter squadron Baracca once commanded. This was a final, respectful nod to the emblem's heroic origins.
