The 154th Open Championship is reaching its climax on the final day at Royal Birkdale, with Sam Burns holding a two-shot lead at 10 under par. Local favourite Tommy Fleetwood is five shots back at 5 under, keeping hopes alive for a home victory on Merseyside.
Leaderboard Update
Sam Burns leads the field at 10 under par after three rounds. Ryan Fox and Si Woo Kim are tied for second at 8 under, two strokes behind. Ryan Gerard and Lucas Herbert share fourth place at 7 under, while Ludvig Aberg, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jackson Suber are at 6 under. Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Tommy Fleetwood are five off the lead at 5 under.
Fleetwood finished his third round with a bogey on the 18th, carding a 69 to remain at 5 under. He expressed cautious optimism: "It will be difficult to get to the top of the leaderboard but you never know."
Fleetwood's Final Round Push
Fleetwood started the final day with a birdie on the fifth hole, moving to 5 under and closing to within three shots of the lead. He added another birdie on the seventh and birdied the 11th to reach 6 under, just one shot off the lead at that point. However, he dropped a shot on the 15th and finished the round at 5 under.
Crowd Support and Atmosphere
Thousands of fans have descended on Royal Birkdale, with many backing Fleetwood. Bradley Stubbs, director of Scottsdale Golf, said: "He's just such a loveable guy, he's so humble and down to earth. If he won, it would make our week. It's history for this area, Tommy Fleetwood all day. I think it'll be chaos in a really good way."
Young fans Frankie Cook, 11, who has been in the Tommy Fleetwood Academy since age 3, and Rocco Smith, 11, described the hometown hero as "inspiring" and "amazing."
