Gina Schumacher has shared a heartfelt birthday tribute to her father, Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, as the seven-time world champion continues his recovery from a devastating skiing accident 12 years ago. The 55-year-old, who turned 56 on 3 January, received public messages of love from both his children on social media, with Gina posting a throwback photograph of herself, her brother Mick and their father smiling together.
In the Instagram post, Gina wrote: 'Happy Birthday Papa! throwback to one of many of our adventures.' Her brother Mick also posted a childhood picture of himself wearing a racing helmet alongside his father, captioned: 'Happy birthday to the best Dad ever. Love you!' The tributes came amid the family's continued efforts to protect Schumacher's privacy, with few updates on his condition since the 2013 accident in the French Alps.
Michael Schumacher suffered severe head trauma after hitting his head on a rock while skiing in Méribel. He was placed in a medically induced coma and has since required constant care from his wife Corinna and medical professionals. Corinna has staunchly guarded his privacy, limiting access to a small circle of trusted individuals.
Jean Todt, Schumacher’s former Ferrari team principal and a close friend, is one of the few people permitted to visit him. Speaking recently, Todt said: 'The family has decided not to answer the question [about Schumacher’s health], a choice that I respect. I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family.' In 2023, Todt revealed that Schumacher is 'no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1' but noted that he is 'wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him.'
Richard Hopkins, formerly of Red Bull, also commented on the strict visiting arrangements, saying: 'There are fairly strict rules, and we don't talk about those rules. I'm not going to try and visit Michael, because I know that's not going to happen.' The Schumacher family continues to prioritise Michael’s dignity and wellbeing, with his children’s public displays of affection offering rare glimpses into their enduring bond.
