Bugatti has revealed its latest bespoke hypercar, a Chiron Super Sport commissioned as a 70th birthday present from a husband to his wife. The car, which cost more than £3m, was created by the French marque's Sur Mesure personalisation division.
The unnamed American customer invited his wife to Bugatti's headquarters in Molsheim, France, for her birthday, where she recalled seeing a rare Type 57 SC Atlantic at the Mullin Automotive Museum in California 20 years earlier. That memory became the inspiration for the one-off design.
Over the course of a year, the concept was developed with lead designer Jascha Straub. He said: 'There was an immediate spark of recognition between us that this is the direction we should take.' The design process was guided by the customer's deep respect for Bugatti's heritage, resulting in a modern homage to the classic 1930s machine.
The Chiron Super Sport is painted in the same silver-blue hue as the original Atlantic. It features a unique horseshoe grille, polished five-spoke alloy wheels and chrome accents. The underside of the rear spoiler bears a hand-drawn silhouette of the Atlantic, while the interior uses Gaucho leather with stitched silhouettes of the classic car on the door panels and centre console.
Mechanically, the car retains the standard Super Sport's 8.0-litre W16 engine, producing 1,578bhp and a top speed limited to 273mph. Named the 57 One Of One, Bugatti says it will achieve iconic status in years to come, and the customer is currently enjoying it on a grand tour of the United States.
