Raheem Sterling's journey from a five-goal youth team performance to a £49 million transfer to Manchester City on July 14, 2015, remains one of Liverpool's most bittersweet tales. The winger, who joined from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 at age 15, scored five times in a 9-0 FA Youth Cup win over Southend United in February 2011, catching the eye of then-caretaker manager Kenny Dalglish.
Early Promise and First-Team Debut
Sterling made his Premier League debut as a late substitute against Wigan Athletic on March 24, 2012, at Anfield. Under Brendan Rodgers, he became a regular in the 2012/13 season, scoring his first senior goal in a 1-0 win over Reading. By November 2012, he became the fifth-youngest England international at 17 years and 342 days.
Liverpool rewarded him with a five-year contract in December 2012, but a thigh injury hampered his form in 2013. He made only four starts after January 2013, struggling to regain fitness.
Breakout Season and Title Near-Miss
The 2013/14 campaign saw Sterling's resurgence. After a slow start, he became a key figure in Liverpool's title challenge, scoring twice in a 5-1 win over Arsenal on February 8, 2014, and netting the opener in a crucial 3-2 victory against Manchester City on April 13. He added two goals in a 3-2 win at Norwich City on April 20, bringing Liverpool to within seven points of the title. However, Steven Gerrard's slip against Chelsea and a 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace ended the dream.
Sterling's contributions were vital: while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge scored 55 goals between them, their form dipped in the final weeks. Sterling scored four goals in the last seven games, proving his importance.
Contract Stalemate and Exit
Despite his progress, Liverpool did not offer a new contract until after the 2014 World Cup. Sterling was still on his £35,000-a-week deal from 2012. In April 2015, he told BBC Sport he had turned down a £100,000-a-week offer, saying, "It's not about the money at all... I don't want to be perceived as a money-grabbing 20-year-old." He claimed he would have signed for less the previous year.
His agent, Aidy Ward, made inflammatory comments, stating, "He is definitely not signing. He’s not signing for £700,000, £800,000 or £900,000 a week." The acrimony deepened when Ward later called Rodgers "sly" for public statements about Sterling's future.
Sterling completed his £49m move to Manchester City on July 14, 2015. In March 2020, he said, "I love Liverpool... they are always in my heart."
