Newcastle United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Championship side Bristol City at Ashton Gate, with the Magpies apologising to their travelling supporters after a lacklustre display.
First-half struggles
Bristol City took control early, with Sam Greenwood opening the scoring from a free-kick on 26 minutes after Jacob Ramsey fouled him. Three minutes later, Lorent Tolaj doubled the lead, racing past Sven Botman to slot home. Newcastle had chances, with Sean Neave denied by Sam Tickle and hitting the woodwork, but boos were heard from the away end at half-time.
Second-half collapse
Jason Knight set up Bird to make it 3-0 on 50 minutes, and home fans taunted Newcastle with chants of 'Premier League, you're having a laugh.' Harvey Barnes pulled one back for Newcastle with 12 minutes left, converting after good work from Matheos Ferreira and Jacob Ramsey, but Botman's comical own goal three minutes later sealed the 4-1 scoreline. Paul Tierney added no stoppage time, and many away fans left early.
Injury concerns and return of key players
Fabian Schar went off with a muscle injury in the first half, replaced by Alex Murphy. Eddie Howe's side are still missing several key players, but Bruno Guimaraes is due back on Friday. The defeat highlighted a lack of leaders and sharpness, with the Magpies outclassed by a fitter Bristol City side.
