Michael Page Expresses Disappointment Over UFC's Carlos Prates Matchmaking
Michael "Venom" Page has openly shared his frustration with the UFC's recent matchmaking decisions, particularly regarding Brazilian fighter Carlos Prates. In an exclusive interview, the British mixed martial artist detailed how his hopes for a bout with Prates were dashed, leading to his upcoming fight against fellow Briton Sam Patterson at UFC London.
Page's Frustration with Prates Situation
Page explained that after Carlos Prates knocked out former welterweight champion Leon Edwards in November, he immediately expressed interest in facing the winner. "I tweeted about it just before they fought, Leon vs Prates," Page told The Independent. "I was like: 'I would love to fight the winner of this fight in London.' That was just me saying that beforehand. Obviously what happened happened [Prates knocked out Edwards]."
The next day, Page messaged the UFC to propose the fight, but received a disappointing response. "And [the UFC] were like: 'Ah, we've kind of got plans for him already,'" he revealed. This news was particularly annoying for Page, who had fought three months prior and was eager for a quick turnaround. "In that moment, it was kind of annoying to hear," he continued, "especially considering this man had stepped one leg out of the cage, and they already have the next step for him!"
Reaction to Conor McGregor Rumour
Adding to Page's confusion, rumours have recently circulated that Carlos Prates might face Conor McGregor next, as McGregor aims to end his five-year absence from the Octagon. When asked about this, Page responded with surprise and bemusement. "What?? That's what I'm trying to say. It's weird that you had plans for him, and now there's confusion in the plans. I don't know what's happening, it's a weird one."
Prates has stated he has had no contact from the UFC about such a fight, but the speculation has only heightened Page's sense of frustration with the promotion's matchmaking process.
Upcoming Fight with Sam Patterson
Instead of facing Prates, Page, 38, will take on unranked welterweight Sam Patterson, 29, at UFC London on 21 March. This match-up has left Page feeling undervalued, as he has established himself as a contender in both middleweight and welterweight divisions since his UFC debut in 2024. In contrast, Patterson is not ranked in the welterweight category where they will compete.
Page has previously worked with Patterson in preparation for other fights, which adds an extra layer of complexity to the situation. "It's a bit more annoying for me, because it's not just an opponent that feels a bit further down the ladder, he's also somebody that I've worked with before as well – in preparation for other fights," Page said earlier this month.
Page's Speculation on UFC Disfavour
Despite expressing respect for Patterson, Page believes he may have fallen out of favour with the UFC. "I definitely don't feel like I'm in good favour with the UFC at the moment. Who I drew as an opponent now, even down to when I saw the fight card, it's interesting. It just feels like I've upset somebody."
He speculated that his lack of recent finishes might be a factor. "The only thing I could really suggest is: I haven't had a finish. So, maybe they've looked to purchase somebody that is known for spectacular finishes, and I haven't quite achieved that yet. That's just me speculating."
Page remains focused on his upcoming bout, but his candid comments highlight ongoing tensions between fighters and promotion matchmaking in the UFC.
