FAA Probes Trump's 250-Foot Arch Near Reagan Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is assessing potential risks posed by President Donald Trump's proposed 250-foot 'triumphal arch' to flights near one of the United States' busiest airports, according to a new report.

The massive structure, planned for the end of Arlington Memorial Bridge opposite the Lincoln Memorial, would sit less than two miles from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Its height and proximity could create hazards for aircraft approaching and departing the D.C. area.

FAA Study Requested

Trump's Interior Department has formally requested an aeronautical study from the FAA, as reported by CNN on Tuesday. Under federal regulations, any construction exceeding 200 feet requires FAA notification. The agency confirmed it has initiated the study, though the timeline remains uncertain.

The FAA typically aims to complete such reviews within 45 to 90 days, but delays can extend the process up to nine months, CNN noted.

Construction Timeline and Purpose

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced last month that construction would begin this year, describing the arch as a 'fitting way to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.'

The Independent has sought comments from the FAA and the National Parks Service, a division of the Interior Department that reportedly submitted the review request.

Airport Operations and Challenges

On Monday, over 800 flights operated through Reagan National Airport, according to FlightAware. The airport's location already presents difficulties for pilots, who must navigate around other D.C. landmarks, including the 555-foot Washington Monument.

In January 2025, a tragic collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter during landing at Reagan National resulted in 67 fatalities.

Trump's Other D.C. Projects

The triumphal arch, topped with a golden winged figure holding a Lady Liberty-style torch and a crown flanked by two gilded eagles, is one of several ambitious projects Trump is pursuing in Washington, D.C.

Another major initiative is the grand ballroom at the White House, estimated to cost around $400 million, excluding security modifications. The East Wing was hastily demolished last October to make way for the ballroom, which has faced legal challenges but continues construction.
