In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 paddock, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has confirmed the surprise departure of its long-serving chief car designer, John Owen.
A Pillar of Success Departs Brackley
The 52-year-old aerodynamicist, who has been with the Brackley-based squad for 19 years, will leave the team later this year. Owen has been an integral figure in one of the most dominant eras in F1 history, contributing to a remarkable haul of nine constructors' championships and eight drivers' titles during his tenure.
His journey began in 2007 when the team was known as Honda, staying through its transformative period as Brawn GP and into the Mercedes era. The team's statement confirmed Owen has decided "now is the right time to take a break from F1" and will begin a period of gardening leave after ensuring a smooth handover to his successor.
Timing Raises Eyebrows Before 2026 Campaign
The announcement comes at a critical juncture for the Silver Arrows, with the new season fast approaching. Owen's exit is confirmed just six weeks before the 2026 campaign begins, with the season-opener scheduled for 8 March in Australia.
While the design for the 2026 car, the W17, is complete and in the fine-tuning phase, the loss of such a senior figure at this stage is highly unusual. The W17 marks the 17th car for which Owen has held overall design responsibility, a testament to his enduring influence.
Internal Reshuffle to Fill the Void
Mercedes have moved swiftly to appoint a successor from within their own ranks. The team confirmed that engineering director Giacomo Tortora will step up to become the new director of car design. He will be overseen by deputy technical director Simone Resta, who joined Mercedes from Ferrari.
The team's statement paid tribute to Owen's "considerable role" in their success, wishing him "all the very best for the future."
All eyes will now be on the team's imminent reveals. Mercedes will unveil renders of the W17 car this Thursday, 22 January 2026. This will be followed by the official 2026 season launch with drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli on Monday 2 February.
The first track action for the new car is set for next week, as all 11 F1 teams are scheduled to take part in a private testing session in Barcelona.
