Lallana: England Must Win World Cup Opener After My Two Failures

Adam Lallana knows better than most how crucial a tournament opener can be. The former England midfielder was part of two squads that failed to win their first match at a major tournament, and he believes England must get it right when they face Croatia in Arlington today.

Lallana's Painful Memories

In 2014, England lost 2-1 to Italy in the humidity of Manaus. Two years later, they drew 1-1 with Russia in Marseille after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser. England were eliminated from the 2014 World Cup after just six days, and at Euro 2016, they suffered a humiliating round-of-16 defeat to Iceland.

Speaking exclusively to Standard Sport, Lallana said: "It's about getting some momentum. We did in Russia against Tunisia, and then beating Panama after. I agree that you need to gain momentum early. You need to get an early goal, get your No9 a goal early in the tournament, get your players playing well."

He added: "It is going to be tough. Luka Modric will be out there — the old wizard. It is important to win that opener. Really important."

Versatility and Squad Depth

Lallana, who earned 34 caps and scored three goals for England, was known for his versatility as a No10 or winger. He noted that having 26 players in the squad allows for specialists, unlike the 23-man squads of his era where players needed to be more adaptable.

Favourites and Underdogs

Asked about his tournament favourites, Lallana said: "I think Argentina, going back-to-back and playing out in America, after favourites. I think France are going to be there or thereabouts. England are underdogs, but that's not a bad thing to be."
