Ferrari have ended speculation about the future of team principal Fred Vasseur by agreeing a new multi-year contract, closing the door on suggestions that the team were considering a move for Christian Horner. The Frenchman, who joined in 2023, has been under pressure as the Scuderia underperformed this season, yet to win a grand prix.
Vasseur was instrumental in bringing Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari and has overseen an overhaul of the team, which last won a drivers’ title in 2007 and a constructors’ championship in 2008. Last season, Ferrari secured five wins and finished second in the constructors’ standings, raising expectations for Hamilton’s first year.
However, the anticipated step forward has not materialised, with McLaren establishing a dominant advantage. Talk in the Italian media suggested Vasseur’s position was in doubt, particularly with his previous contract expiring at the end of this season, and some reports linked Horner, who was dismissed by Red Bull three weeks ago.
Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari announced it would stick with Vasseur. “I’m grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me,” he said. “This renewal is not just a confirmation, it’s a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver. Over the past 30 months, we’ve laid strong foundations and now we must build on them with consistency and determination.”
Ferrari did not specify the contract length but expressed confidence in Vasseur’s ability to return the team to the top of Formula One. The team currently sits second in the constructors’ championship, 268 points behind McLaren, while Hamilton has yet to score a podium after 13 races this season.
