Lewis Hamilton lost more ground to Kimi Antonelli after another weekend of Ferrari mistakes and his own penalties left him 50 points behind in the drivers' championship.
Hamilton's Penalties and Ferrari Blunders
Hamilton started second on the grid but a grid penalty demoted him to fifth. Ferrari then pitted him for soft tyres late in the race, dropping him behind Antonelli. The stop also triggered a pit lane speeding penalty, costing him a possible podium.
"I definitely don't think we should have taken the stop," Hamilton said. "The call came just before the pit lane entry and I didn't have time to debate it. You've got to trust the decision that has been taken but, in hindsight, my tyres were totally fine. I was probably going to lose out to Max [Verstappen], but I think I would have kept third at least. And it just opened up the door to the penalty."
Hamilton Admits Mistakes
Hamilton conceded his own performances have been scruffy since his Barcelona win in June. "These last three races, for me, have not been great. Lots of mistakes and a lot of penalties in the last three races. I've got to work hard to not give them any opportunities to give me any more penalties moving forwards," he said.
Norris Wins, Piastri Hit by Issues
Lando Norris won the race, feeling better behind the wheel than at any point this year. "It was probably one of my best races in terms of personal performance, and that always makes me feel good. My lap one to two was not my finest, I was just a bit overly aggressive. Apart from that, the pace was pretty incredible from me and the car," Norris said.
Oscar Piastri led the first half after a good start but lost time after a collision with Carlos Sainz while lapping the Williams, allowing Norris to overcut him. Piastri's gearbox then failed, ending his race.
Antonelli Increases Lead
With Hamilton's penalties and George Russell recovering from the back to seventh after a nightmare start, Antonelli extended his title lead. His third place was a significant result on a bad day for Mercedes. "I pray that things calm down in the second half. I'm going to stay positive and keep on pushing," Russell said.
