Eighteen months after a dramatic exit from Formula One, American driver Logan Sargeant has secured a high-profile return to top-level motorsport. The 25-year-old has been confirmed as a factory driver for Ford's return to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) next year, marking a significant career resurgence.
From F1 Setback to Ford Factory Driver
Logan Sargeant's Formula One journey concluded abruptly midway through the 2024 season. Driving for Williams, his tenure ended after a fiery crash at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. Across 36 Grand Prix starts between 2023 and 2024, he scored a single championship point. Williams replaced him with Franco Colapinto, who later formed a formidable partnership with Carlos Sainz under team principal James Vowles.
Sargeant spent 2025 without a permanent race seat, making only sporadic appearances in endurance racing. However, Ford has now handed him a leading role in its high-profile WEC hypercar programme for the 2026 season. He will race alongside experienced campaigners Mick Rockenfeller and Sebastian Priaulx.
A Needed Break and a Racing Rebirth
In an interview with Daily Sports Car, Sargeant opened up about the challenging period following his F1 departure. He described the experience as "hectic, intense, emotionally challenging, physically demanding" and admitted he needed time to "reassess" his future.
"My mind just felt like it needed a little break," Sargeant revealed. "I feel like a lot of people may struggle to understand that until you’re in that position, but I just needed to let the whole experience sink in, let my body naturally recover and start to reassess what it wanted to do. And, naturally, it was racing in the end."
Spearheading Ford's Hypercar Challenge
The American's appointment is a key part of Ford's ambitious factory effort in the World Endurance Championship. Sargeant expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating: "It's a privilege to be here and be welcomed into the Ford family. I'm super excited for this programme and super excited to help spearhead the development of the hypercar."
His racing programme begins immediately. This weekend, Sargeant will compete for Era Motorsport at the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona. Furthermore, he will gain valuable experience this year by racing in the WEC for Proton Competition, priming him for his full-time Ford factory role in 2026.
"I'm excited for the season ahead and getting ready for the following [year]," he added, signalling his commitment to this new chapter in his professional career.
