Felipe Drugovich could finally make his competitive Formula 1 debut this weekend at the Hungarian Grand Prix, replacing the injured Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin. The Brazilian driver, 25, has been waiting for this opportunity since winning the Formula 2 title in 2022.
Alonso, who turned 44 earlier this week, has been managing a muscular back injury sustained after the Belgian Grand Prix. While he completed media duties on Thursday, Aston Martin confirmed on Friday morning that he would sit out first practice. A team statement said: 'As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll.'
It remains unclear whether Alonso will race this weekend. Drugovich, who signed with Aston Martin as a reserve driver after his F2 success, has made several practice appearances but has yet to start a Grand Prix. He has also raced in endurance events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and recently competed in Formula E.
Drugovich arrived at the Hungaroring with his girlfriend, Carla Sirotti, who has been frequently seen in the paddock. The couple's presence has drawn attention, with Sirotti stealing the spotlight amid the speculation over Drugovich's potential debut.
