England defender Djed Spence is wearing a custom-made protective face mask and jaw guard during the World Cup semi-final against Argentina. The gear protects a broken jaw he suffered in May during a Premier League match for Tottenham against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Why Does He Wear the Mask?
The fracture occurred during an aerial duel when he was caught in the face by the elbow of Chelsea striker Liam Delap, a challenge Spence described as "crazy." Despite the injury, he played through it just five days later to help Spurs beat Everton.
How Long Will He Need It?
Doctors estimate his jawbone will take roughly three months to fully heal. This timeline means he could still be wearing the mask when the Premier League resumes next month.
What Has Spence Said About It?
While Spence admits the brace is a bit uncomfortable and hot, he joked that it won't impact his performance because he plays football with his feet, not his jaw, and he will play through the problem.
