Dan Burn Describes Horrific England Heat Ahead of Argentina World Cup Semi-Final
Dan Burn: Horrific England Heat Before Argentina Semi-Final

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has described the 'horrific' heat and humidity England endured during their World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway, ahead of their semi-final clash against Argentina in Atlanta.

England's Grueling Quarter-Final in Miami

The match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Saturday night saw temperatures feel like 42 degrees Celsius due to the humidity. Burn, who came on as a substitute in the 111th minute, helped the Three Lions secure a 2-1 win and a place in their first semi-final since 2018.

Burn told Chronicle Live from the US: 'Listen, I was desperate to get on. I knew it was probably going to be the type of game I would come on in. I just have to come on and help the team. When the final whistle sounded it was just a feeling of pure relief, it was a tough game for both teams, playing 120 minutes in that heat is horrific.'

He added: 'I can understand why the game wasn't at the highest quality people would have wanted.'

Atlanta's Air-Conditioned Stadium Offers Relief

England fans have been arriving in Georgia, where Atlanta's nickname 'Hotlanta' reflects its typically hot climate. However, the semi-final at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be played in more pleasant conditions thanks to the venue's air conditioning system, which can cool the 75,000-capacity arena.

Burn hopes the improved conditions will allow England to perform at a higher level. He said: 'We did not reach the performance levels that we wanted to, I think the heat probably paid a big part in that. The good thing is we are winning and finding different ways to win. And it is exciting knowing that if we do reach the potential we can we can do something special, with two games to go we feel we can do that.'

Burn's Impact and Team Spirit

Burn's two cameo appearances in the tournament have been crucial. In the group stage match at Estadio Azteca in Mexico, he made eight defensive contributions in just 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute. That performance drew attention from journalists worldwide, including from Mexico, Nigeria, the US, India, and Portugal.

Reflecting on the team's resilience, Burn said: 'You can talk about brotherhood and character a lot. But until you actually see it on the pitch, it is hard to believe it, but we have shown it in the last two games when we are not playing very well. It shows the way we got through the last two games.'

After the win over Norway, Burn celebrated with teammates Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, embodying the dream of representing England at a World Cup. The 6ft 7in Geordie has become a fan favorite and a key figure in Thomas Tuchel's squad.

Looking Ahead to Argentina

England now face world champions Argentina in the semi-final. Burn is eager to be involved again after his impactful substitute appearances. The match promises to be a stern test, but with better conditions and growing team form, the Three Lions are optimistic.
