Cody Gakpo will undergo a scan after suffering an ankle injury during the Netherlands' 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday. The Liverpool attacker was forced off after 17 minutes following a challenge from Ipswich Town midfielder Sasa Lukic.
Gakpo forced off early
Lukic upended Gakpo in the middle of the pitch after 10 minutes. Although the 27-year-old initially tried to play through the impact, the problem became severe enough for him to go down while the ball was out of play and signal to the medical team. Gakpo was seen grimacing and holding his right lower leg towards the ankle.
Netherlands head coach Xavi has since confirmed the former PSV Eindhoven player has suffered an ankle injury and hopes it isn't too severe. He said: “I don’t think so. It’s his ankle, that’s all I know. Tomorrow we will know, but hopefully it’s not too important.”
Potential absence for Liverpool
Should the ankle injury be serious, Gakpo could miss the remainder of the Netherlands' international break as they face Greece and Serbia before the league returns. His involvement when the Premier League makes a comeback could also be in jeopardy, with Liverpool hosting leaders Manchester City in the first game back at Anfield.
After a summer of transfer uncertainty, Gakpo has been one of the standout performers for the Reds under Andoni Iraola's side. The forward has scored two goals and provided four assists in all competitions, including an important equaliser during the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on the opening day.
Isak also sidelined
Gakpo's injury follows news that emerged on Sunday which revealed that Alexander Isak will return to Merseyside following a minor injury. Sweden head coach Graham Potter said: “He’s got a small problem with his thigh. It’s not a big one but because of the amount of games we’ve got in a small space of time, he won’t be able to make those. Frustrating for him and obviously for us.”
