A number of road closures and lane closures are in place across the North East this week, affecting drivers in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland, Sunderland and County Durham.
Newcastle and Gateshead
In Newcastle, temporary traffic lights are in operation on the B1296 Old Durham Road in both directions between Evistones Road and Valley Drive due to water main work, until 00:00 on 29th September. Temporary traffic lights are also in place on Easedale Gardens in both directions between Harlow Green Lane and Wetheral Gardens due to gas main work, until 00:00 on 29th September.
Traffic is taking turns due to electricity work on Aycliffe Crescent in both directions at Blackhill Crescent, until 00:00 on 29th September. Nelson Street is closed in both directions due to roadworks between Swinburne Place and Lambton Street, until 17:30 on 2nd October. Durant Road is closed in both directions from John Dobson Street to College Street, from 07:00 on 27th September to 19:00 on 27th October. John Dobson Street is also closed in both directions from Northumberland Road to Lisle Street, from 07:00 on 27th September to 19:00 on 27th October.
Temporary traffic lights are in place on the B6317 Whickham Highway in both directions between Dunston Bank (Dunston Hill) and Knightside Gardens (Lobley Hill) due to roadworks, until 17:00 on 4th November. On the A695 eastbound, the exit slip road lane is blocked at Chain Bridge Road due to electricity work, until 13th November. The A167 Gateshead Flyover is closed in both directions due to major works to demolish the flyover between B1426 High Street West and Hawks Road / Lambton Street, with the road under the flyover between the Durham Road and Park Lane roundabouts also closed, until 00:59 on 11th September 2028.
North Tyneside and South Tyneside
In North Tyneside, temporary traffic lights are in place on the B1322 in both directions between the A186 and Church Road due to gas main work, until 00:00 on 30th September. Temporary traffic lights are also on the B1322 Station Road in both directions at St Edmunds Close due to emergency repairs and gas main work, until 00:00 on 30th September. On the A187 Hadrian Road in both directions at A186 Station Road, temporary traffic lights are in place due to roadworks, with delays expected, until 00:00 on 2nd October.
Temporary traffic lights are on Monkseaton Front Street in both directions at Cauldwell Lane due to gas main work, with delays expected, until 28th October. One lane is closed on the A192 Preston North Road northbound from A1058 Beach Road to Hartburn Road (Morrisons) in Preston due to junction improvements, upgrading the footpath and crossings, until 15:30 on 10th November 2026.
In South Tyneside, temporary traffic lights are in place in Boldon Colliery on Perth Avenue in both directions between Edinburgh Road and Nairn Street due to roadworks, until 17:00 on 28th September. Temporary traffic lights are also on the B1298 Abingdon Way in both directions between Witney Way and A184 Newcastle Road, with delays expected, until 17:00 on 18th December. On Didcot Way in both directions at B1298 Abingdon Way, temporary traffic lights are in place due to roadworks, until 17:00 on 18th December.
Northumberland and Sunderland
In Northumberland, temporary traffic lights are on the A196 Coleridge Drive in both directions between Sherborne Villas and Cambridge Road due to telecoms work, with delays expected, until 00:00 on 30th September. Temporary traffic lights are also on the B1505 in both directions near Hawthorn Villas due to emergency repairs and telecoms work, until 00:59 on 30th September. On the B6341 High Street in Rothbury in both directions between The Maltings and Prospect Terrace, temporary traffic lights are in place due to electricity work, with delays expected, until 00:00 on 1st October.
In Cornriggs, temporary traffic lights are on the B6295 in both directions between Cross Lane (Cornriggs) and Dudley Place (Allenheads) due to electricity work, until 00:00 on 6th October. Temporary traffic lights are on the B1334 in both directions at Spital Road due to water main work, until 00:00 on 9th October. On Coopie's Lane in both directions between Coopies Way and Coopies Field, temporary traffic lights are in place due to roadworks, until 18:00 on 12th October. In Bedlington, temporary traffic lights are on Church Lane in both directions between Towers Close and A193 Front Street West due to roadworks, until 00:00 on 19th October.
Hallstile Bank northbound is closed due to roadworks from Hallgate to Haugh Lane, until 31st October. In Ashington, temporary traffic lights are on Hawthorn Road in both directions between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue due to gas main work, until 6th November. Traffic is taking turns due to roadworks on Moorland Avenue in both directions between Moorland Crescent and Moorland Drive, until 13th November. Temporary traffic lights are on Sixth Avenue in both directions at Rosalind Street due to gas main work, until 20th November. The B6309 in both directions is closed due to water main work in East Wallhouses from the Aydon turn off to the B6318, until 27th November. The B6321 at Corbridge is closed in both directions due to roadworks between the B6259 (Corbridge) and the A695 (Dilston), until 17:00 on 22nd December. In East Sleekburn, temporary traffic lights are on Sandfield Road in both directions at Harbour View due to roadworks, until 22nd January 2027.
In Sunderland, Westheath Avenue is closed in both directions due to roadworks from Hereford Road (Leechmere Industrial Estate) to Hill View Road, until 00:00 on 29th September, with a diversion for bus number 10. In Houghton-le-Spring, temporary traffic lights are on Queensway in both directions between Seaton Avenue and Hall Lane due to gas main work, until 17:00 on 5th October. Temporary traffic lights are on the B1285 in both directions between Wells Crescent and B1287 The Graham Way due to gas main work, with delays expected, until 17:00 on 12th October. A lane is closed on the B1260 Gillas Lane West in both directions between Durham Road and A182 Hetton Road due to gas main work, until 17:00 on 13th October. In Pity Me, temporary traffic lights are on Abbey Road in both directions between Front Street and Smithfield due to gas main work, until 17:00 on 19th October. In Edmundbyers, temporary traffic lights are on the B6306 in both directions between Pow Hill Country Park (Edmundbyers) and Park Bank (Blanchland) due to water main work, until 2nd November. In Dawdon, temporary traffic lights are on Heathway in both directions between Fern Crescent and Parkside Crescent due to gas main work, until 17:00 on 10th November. Narrow lanes are in place in Durham on Framwelgate Waterside in both directions from Sidegate to Millburngate, until 31st December 2027.
