Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup after suffering an ankle injury during his nation's late 2-1 victory against the Ivory Coast. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back, 26, had started twice in the tournament and scored in Germany's 7-1 win over Curacao.
Nagelsmann confirms Schlotterbeck's absence
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed his disappointment, stating: "We'll miss Schlotti enormously on the pitch. He's an outstanding defender and his ability to play out from the back is exceptional. He could have played a big role at this World Cup." Nagelsmann added that the squad tried to lift Schlotterbeck's spirits and praised his positive attitude. The defender will remain with the squad off the pitch.
Dortmund sporting director reacts
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken said: "I feel extremely sorry for Nico; he was in really good form and an indispensable part of our national team's starting line-up. But Nico showed last year how he can come back even stronger after an injury. He'll do the same this time too; we're convinced of that."
FIFA rules prevent replacement
Germany cannot replace Schlotterbeck in their squad due to FIFA regulations. Antonio Rudiger, who replaced him against the Ivory Coast, is expected to take his place in the starting XI. Schlotterbeck had earned 29 caps for his country before the injury.
Liverpool transfer implications
Schlotterbeck had been linked with a move to Liverpool as a potential replacement for Ibrahima Konate, who joined Real Madrid after his contract expired. Dortmund secured Schlotterbeck on a new five-year contract in April, keeping him at the club until 2031. The defender began his professional career at Freiburg before moving to Dortmund in 2022, making 161 appearances and scoring 11 goals, five of which came last season.
Germany's World Cup campaign continues
Germany have already qualified for the last 32 and will face Ecuador in their final group match. Despite Schlotterbeck's absence, Nagelsmann's side will aim to continue their strong tournament performance.
