Canada star Ismael Kone has been hospitalized and is set to undergo surgery after suffering a horrific injury during his team's World Cup win over Qatar. The midfielder fractured his fibula and tibia in the incident, according to reports.
The Injury and Immediate Aftermath
Kone was stretchered off the field after being fouled by Assim Madibo, who received a red card for the challenge. The 24-year-old was in visible pain as soon as he hit the ground, while Madibo put his head in his hands in distress. Tensions flared among players and on the sidelines as Kone received medical treatment. Despite the severity of the injury, Kone managed to wave to the crowd as he was carried away.
Hospital Update and Opponent's Apology
After the match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed that Kone was at the hospital, accompanied by his mother, Suzanne, and was preparing for surgery. Marsch also revealed that Madibo came into the Canada dressing room to apologize for his challenge.
Reactions from Teammates
Canada captain Stephen Eustaquio, who was among the first to reach Kone, said: “I saw his leg. I saw that something wasn’t right. We’re going to miss him. He has that X factor that our team really needs.” Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick in the match, questioned the necessity of the tackle: “If there’s a play where you cannot win the ball, there’s no point. It’s just to hurt people.”
