Belgian GP Grid: Norris Penalty Reshuffles Starting Order

Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, continuing Mercedes' perfect qualifying record in 2026. Lando Norris, who qualified third, will start 13th due to a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his annual engine component allowance.

Qualifying Highlights

Antonelli was the favourite after impressive practice performances and delivered a supreme lap to beat Max Verstappen, who benefited from a tow from teammate Isack Hadjar. Hadjar also has grid penalties and will start from the back. Norris, whose mother is Belgian, never had a chance at pole given the penalty.

Lewis Hamilton's Late Recovery

Lewis Hamilton's participation was in doubt after a crash in final practice, but Ferrari mechanics repaired his car in time for qualifying. He advanced comfortably, while four of the six Q1 eliminations were Cadillac and Aston Martin cars. Lance Stroll was slowest, over four seconds off the pace.

Q1 and Q2 Eliminations

Esteban Ocon continued his poor form, while Alex Albon also dropped out in Q1. Oliver Bearman was last in Q2, narrowly beaten by Carlos Sainz, whose exit means Williams still await their first Q3 appearance. Liam Lawson's Q3 streak ended as he settled for 11th, but will start ninth after penalties.

Grid Penalties Impact

Norris and Hadjar's penalties reshuffle the grid, with Lawson moving up. Hadjar is guaranteed last place, but Red Bull valued his tow for Verstappen. The start of Q3 was delayed due to a hydraulics leak on Nico Hulkenberg's car.
