Wayne Rooney has launched a scathing attack on Thomas Tuchel's substitutions during England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, claiming the manager's defensive changes cost the team a spot in the final.
Rooney's Verdict on Tuchel's Substitutions
The former England captain did not hold back in his criticism of Tuchel's decision to replace goalscorer Anthony Gordon with defenders Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O'Reilly in the final 20 minutes, with England leading 1-0 at the Atlanta Stadium.
Speaking on the BBC, Rooney said: "If you’re an attacking player on that pitch and you go 1-0 up and you see the changes which the manager’s making, you’re losing belief, there’s only so many times you can get away with it."
He added: "Then you start thinking, oh no we’re going to sit back for this long, how are we going to get through this? Once we got the first goal, we didn't look to go for the second goal."
Costly Gamble Backfires
Tuchel's plan to preserve the lead backfired spectacularly as Enzo Fernandez equalised in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez headed home Lionel Messi's cross in stoppage time, sealing Argentina's place in a second consecutive World Cup final.
Rooney insisted the manager's gamble was the decisive factor: "For the players, and for me, Thomas Tuchel made the decision, and when you make the decision it is a gamble. The gamble he made was to go with five at the back, which allowed them to dictate the game. The decisions that Tuchel has made cost us tonight."
England's World Cup Not Over Yet
Despite the heartbreak, England's World Cup 2026 journey continues with a bronze medal match against France on Saturday night in Miami. This will be England's first third-place play-off since 2018, when they lost 2-0 to Belgium in Saint Petersburg.
The match also holds significance for the Golden Boot race, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe all still in contention for the individual prize.
