David Keohan, a 47-year-old Irishman, has transformed his life through an ancient practice: lifting heavy stones. After spending his twenties overweight and unhealthy, he discovered a passion for fitness that led him to become a world champion in kettlebell sport and, later, a stone lifting enthusiast. His journey began at age 32 when, hungover, he bought a pair of trainers and ran a marathon within six months. Now, he dedicates his time to reviving the lost culture of Irish stone lifting.
From Kettlebells to Boulders
During the Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020, when gyms closed, Keohan started lifting a 60kg stone from his wife's art collection in his backyard. This sparked a deeper interest. He soon discovered a rich history behind stone lifting, which had been used in Ireland as a rite of passage or job test. Keohan made it his mission to find and lift these ancient stones, often traveling to remote locations like the island of Inishmore.
The First Stone
In 2023, Keohan found his first stone on Inishmore, a 171.2kg granite boulder with a pinkish hue. After months of training, he returned and lifted it to his lap, then his lips, planting three kisses as described in a story by Liam O'Flaherty. Since then, he has discovered over 50 stones across Ireland, sharing them on his Instagram account Indiana Stones.
More Than Just Lifting
Keohan emphasizes that stone lifting is about culture, not just strength. He says, "Come along to one of these stones. If you can get the wind under it, great, but it doesn't matter. The most important part is that you get to be a part of the continuation of its story and culture." He stresses respect for the stones and their history, warning against dropping them, as that would break the chain of tradition.
Keohan's efforts have attracted international attention, with people traveling to lift the stones he has rediscovered. He recently published a book, The Wind Beneath the Stone, documenting his journey. His story shows that fitness can be deeply personal and connected to heritage, offering a unique path to health and community.
