World Cup Day 9 delivered more drama, red card controversy, and a Manchester United star's standout performance. Scotland fell 1-0 to Morocco, while Brazil's Matheus Cunha scored twice to lead his team to a 3-0 victory over Haiti. Meanwhile, Miguel Almiron made unwanted history as the first player sent off for covering his mouth during an argument, and Turkey and Haiti were eliminated from the tournament.
Scotland Suffer Defeat Against Morocco
Scotland lost 1-0 to Morocco, with John McGinn and Scott McTominay having penalty appeals waved away. Manager Steve Clarke expressed disappointment that Issa Diop avoided a red card for fouling Che Adams as the last defender. Ismael Saibari scored the only goal in the second minute for Morocco. Scotland now face a crucial final group match against Brazil next Wednesday.
Miguel Almiron Makes Unwanted History
Paraguay's Miguel Almiron became the first player sent off for covering his mouth while arguing with an opponent, during Paraguay's 1-0 win over Turkey. The new rule, introduced in late April, aims to curb discriminatory or inappropriate behaviour. Almiron, a former Newcastle United star, received a red card just before half-time.
Two Countries Eliminated
Turkey were knocked out after losing to 10-man Paraguay, following a 2-0 defeat to Australia in their opening match. Haiti became the first team eliminated, losing 3-0 to Brazil after a 1-0 defeat to Scotland. Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, qualified for the first time since 1974.
Manchester United Ace Cunha Shines for Brazil
Matheus Cunha scored twice as Brazil beat Haiti 3-0, answering critics after a draw with Morocco. His first goal came in the 23rd minute when a deflection off Haiti defender Hannes Delcroix spun into the net. His second was a superb finish after Vinicius Jr set him up. Vinicius Jr also scored in first-half stoppage time. Brazil face losing Raphinha, who was substituted with an injury.
Referee Rants and Complaints
Australia coach Tony Popovic clashed with officials after a 2-0 loss to the United States. Player Nestory Irankunda claimed referee Felix Zwayer favoured the USA. Algeria lodged a complaint with FIFA over refereeing in their 3-0 loss to Argentina, alleging Alexis Mac Allister and Lionel Messi should have been penalised.
Ronaldo's Sisters Criticise Teammates
Cristiano Ronaldo posted on Instagram urging unity after Portugal's 1-1 draw with DR Congo. His sisters defended him online, with Elma Aveiro calling the result unfair and Katia Aveiro criticising teammates for poor passing and counter-attacks. Portugal face Uzbekistan next.
