Manuel Ugarte has been heavily criticised by media in his native Uruguay after a disappointing 2-2 draw against Cape Verde at the 2026 World Cup. The Manchester United midfielder's national team now sit on just two points from two matches, leaving their knockout hopes in serious jeopardy.
Uruguay's World Cup struggles continue
Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in their opening Group H match, and the draw against Cape Verde leaves them needing a result against Spain to advance. The group, which appeared manageable on paper, has proven treacherous for Marcelo Bielsa's side.
Against Cape Verde, Uruguay fell behind to a stunning Kevin Pina free-kick before scoring two late first-half goals to take the lead. However, Helio Varela equalised in the 61st minute, and Uruguay could not find a winner.
Ugarte's performance under fire
Ugarte, who anchored midfield until his substitution in the 70th minute, failed to win any of his five ground duels. Outlet Montevideo Portal gave him a scathing review, stating: "Manuel Ugarte. Very sloppy with the ball. Against an opponent with very physical and fast players, he struggled a lot. Once again, he was one of the team's biggest weaknesses and should have been substituted much earlier. He's not there, he just wasn't there."
El Observador also highlighted his poor showing, noting that a weak volley from Ugarte drew a frustrated reaction from Luis Suarez, who was seen holding his head in the stands. The publication described Uruguay's midfield as lacking "zero ideas, zero football, zero creativity."
Ugarte's uncertain future at Manchester United
Ugarte's future at Manchester United is uncertain after a lacklustre campaign. He is expected to leave the club this summer, with the draw against Cape Verde doing little to boost his market value. The 24-year-old was signed from Paris Saint-Germain but has struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford.
Uruguay now face a must-win match against Spain to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Bielsa may consider dropping Ugarte after his recent performances.
