Tiger Woods was released on bail on Friday, hours after the golf star's Land Rover clipped a truck and overturned on a narrow road near his home in Jupiter Island, Florida. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.
The incident occurred shortly before 2pm when Woods attempted to overtake a truck on a two-lane road with a 30mph speed limit. The vehicle clipped a trailer, veered off the road, and came to rest on its driver's side after sliding along the roadway. Woods, who was alone, exited through the passenger side.
Investigators said Woods showed signs of impairment and was subjected to roadside tests before being taken into custody. A breath test showed no alcohol in his system, and authorities believed impairment was due to medication or drugs. No substances were found in the vehicle. Woods refused to submit to a urinalysis test and was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
No injuries were reported, though Sheriff Budensiek noted the outcome could have been far worse given the narrow roadway. President Donald Trump, who called Woods a close friend, expressed sympathy upon hearing the news.
This is the latest in a series of traffic-related incidents for the 50-year-old golfer. In February 2021, he was seriously injured in a high-speed crash in Los Angeles. He was also arrested on a DUI charge in 2017 after being found asleep behind the wheel, and crashed his SUV in 2009 outside his home in Windermere, Florida.
Woods has played a limited schedule in recent years due to multiple injuries and surgeries. He has not competed in an official PGA Tour event since July 2024, though he appeared this week in the TGL indoor league. His availability for next month's Masters remains uncertain.
